Legendary American sign painter Mike Meyer is in town next week – see him in action, watch the Sign Painters movie and find out what makes Mike tick at an evening hosted by Pick Me Up Presents.
Endorsed by Ed Ruscha (a former sign painter himself) Sign Painters is a feature length film directed by Faythe Levine and Sam Macon, which takes an affectionate look at the 150 year old tradition in the US. Told through the stories of sign painters such as Ira Coyne, Bob Dewhurst, Keith Knecht, Norma Jeane Maloney and Stephen Powers, the film looks at how technology is impacting on this very specialist occupation and meets those who are working hard to keep the age-old tradition alive.
Courtesy of Pick Me Up Presents, there’s a chance to see a screening of the film at Somerset House on Tuesday 9 September as part of an evening dedicated to the craft. Legendary US sign painter Mike Meyer will be giving demonstrations beforehand, and afterwards he’ll be in conversation with Sam Roberts, founder (and chief tourguide) of the excellent Ghostsigns archive. Sounds like our kind of evening…
