Wonder Stuff

Invisible to the eye, thinner than a human hair and 200 times stronger than steel, wonder material Graphene is celebrated in a new exhibition designed by LucienneRoberts+, Universal Design Studio, and DHA.

LucienneRoberts+ has teamed up with Universal Design Studio and DHA lighting to create the first exhibition dedicated to the substance Graphene. The aptly entitled Wonder Materials: Graphene and Beyond opens at Manchester's Museum of Science and Industry, before moving to the Science Museum in London.

First discovered by scientists at the University of Manchester, Graphene certainly is a wonder material. Thinner than a human hair and 200 times stronger than steel, as well as being super lightweight, it's highly conductive and very strong. It's made from a single, one-atom layer of carbon, which makes it invisible to the naked eye – and therefore quite tricky to represent visually.

LucienneRoberts+ designed the exhibition's graphic identity and marketing collateral including the logo, posters, flyers, billboards and digital marketing. The peeled back logo treatment nods to a 2D future and the lead image (by photographer Angela Moore) embodies the key theme of graphene as a new wonder ingredient with the potential to really change the world we live in. Working closely with the museum's curatorial team, LR+ and Universal commissioned a series of pieces especially for the exhibition, with the specific aim of showing visitors the past, present and (imagined) future of this amazing material.

Some of these commissions include a brand new installation by Random International (the collective’s first public commission in the UK since their hugely popular Rain Room), plus an immersive recreation of a 'clean room' at the National Graphene Institute, featuring large scale images by David Shaw and photo essays by Panos Pictures’ photographers from around the world.

In addition to what's described as a 'provocative' new work by the poet Lemn Sissay MBE, there's an interactive exhibit developed with Hirsch & Mann, which features illustrations by Russell Bell. This fun piece invites the audience to imagine and invent the graphene products of the future.

Wonder Materials:Graphene and Beyond runs until 25 June 2017 at the Museum of Science and Industry Manchester.
