Von has been creating some of the most beautiful prints around for several years, and he's very kindly given us one of his latest to give away to one lucky Grafik reader. We caught up with the talented illustrator to find out more.
How did the idea for Migration first come about?
After my solo show in NY the previous year at the then Espeis Gallery, I learnt the gallery there had started exhibiting artists' work on a billboard on the side of their building. It was an opportunity too good to miss. I had begun working on the 'Animal Series' and after some hard thinking hit upon the idea of a flock of birds migrating from London to New York. I approached the Old Truman Brewery and Espies with the idea, and not long after I was busy pasting up my work nine metres wide.
Was it your first large-scale commission? How did your approach differ given the scale and situation?
It wasn't a commission as such, just something I really wanted to do and thankfully the right people wanted to get on board with the idea. I had a lot of help with the install too from my good friend Darren Firth. A few years later I was back at the Truman Brewery again, this time with a triptych of billboards for the launch of my Semblance Collector's Box Set, but nothing since then. That's definitely something I hope to change in 2017.
Have you changed any elements of the original piece for this new print?
The composition has changed slightly to work better within the dimensions of the page and a couple of new birds have been added.
What’s hanging on your walls right now? And what would you like to have hanging on your walls?
After some decorating I've just rehung a Morning Glory by Conor Harrington from his 2013 show at Lazarides. There's a lot I would like on the wall, one of Geoff McFetridge's larger paintings would be nice. We have a couple of his A4 studies that could do with the company if you're listening Geoff?
What’s next for you?
I'm busy finishing up commercial projects for 2016 and updating the HelloVon website for the first time in almost two years, ready for relaunch early next year. I've also just moved into a new studio which I'm really excited about, I feel like a kid with a new toy – once everything has found its home I can't wait to start working on new originals again in January.
To be in with a chance of winning one of this limited edition of twenty prints which retail at £150, just send an email with 'HelloVon' in the subject box to firstname.lastname@example.org, telling us when Von founded his studio.
